For those who love nature…
Last week we basked in beautiful hot weather in the UK and over much of Europe, this week we’re back to much lower temperatures and moments of sheer winter. In between there are bursts of hot sunshine but within minutes the heavens are opening again.
As we officially passed into meteorological summer on the first day of June, I thought I would just look back on what a topsy-turvy spring we have had. From lashing rains and freezing cold winds to heatwaves and back again, nature has left us guessing once again. Wellies to flip-flops, jumpers and jeans to light summer dresses - it’s been all the fun of the fair!
All of this climactic chaos has caused much consternation for gardeners. One moment we’re watering everything like fury, the next we wished we hadn’t bothered as nature does it for us.
Having been away during one of the cold wet weeks followed by hot weather, we returned to a garden which had gone bonkers and the house resembled Sleeping Beauty’s castle as wayward plants fuelled by water and warmth threatened to close her in forever! We were non-stop gardening until the rains returned. Who knows what is around the corner for us this summer? Only time will tell…
Meanwhile, here are the links to some seasonal notes I wrote for February and March as a way of tracking the life of the garden in 2026.
How has your garden been so far this year?
