The Big Picture

In the wake of the latest earthquake tragedy to hit Italy (and it's a problem that is not going away) I thought I would post two of the most moving pictures of man's fragility in the face of nature that I know.

They are not new, but they endure as a symbol of man's quiet and lonely suffering. For me, they act as a reminder of our need for humility and our need to love one another in the global context of an increasingly unstable world and fragile planet.

Easter, a time of death and rebirth. Let us learn from all our mistakes. Let us act now to secure the future of our civilisation and this planet for as long as is humanly possible.

Whatever your religious or secular standpoint, this is our moment to change our ways, to take responsibility, before we lose everything that is beautiful and sacred to humankind.

Life is fragile enough, without our collective stupidity.

I'm afraid that the pessimist in me says we've doing too little, too late. I hope that's not so. On a happier note, enjoy your break.

Very well said.
We don't learn, though, do we?
Thanks for posting these thoughts today.

We're fragile, tiny beings on an awesome, powerful planet in an even bigger world. But humankind thinks its bigger than everything. We will carry on regardless, stopping every now and then to think or do something when something big happens but then ploughing on as if it never happened.

Very thought provoking. But we have to carry on regardless, there is I fear no other way.
Oh, those figures are so thought provoking. Please God, we learn soon. We are all taking far too long..

Thank you everyone for your comments. I had been watching Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth' the other night and found it very compelling (despite having previously not been a particular Al Gore fan - thought he was just another bloomin politician). My thoughts in this post should perhaps be put in that context i.e our responsibility towards the future of our planet is a REAL issue. If we care about future generations and this amazing spinning thing we cling to, called Planet Earth, then we cannot bury our heads in the sand any longer. There are too many issues to be confronted and which need confronting NOW.
Nice blogs! sensitive you are! :)
