I first went to Aviemore in Scotland when I was 9 years old and haven’t looked back since - though I didn’t really get into it massively until I was 16. Two ski seasons followed (one in the Pyrenees, one in the Alps) and then four years in Italy where we skied all winter in both the Alps and Dolomites.

For me it is the most liberating and exhilarating sport - not least of all because it provides both physical and mental wellbeing. What better than to be sweeping down a mountain on a bluebird day with fresh snow and magnificent views! Food for the soul. And that’s without mentioning the mountain bars and restaurants and the apres-ski!!

I’m glad you’ve finally joined the tribe!Carah Bodenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11429666157453439321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1197429752310795554.post-44252479890404501502023-04-11T08:24:17.017+01:002023-04-11T08:24:17.017+01:00Nice read! I have only taken up skiing in recent years, with mixed and at times deeply conflicting feelings - and yet, at its best it is so compelling - it has also transformed my attitude to winter, which previously I loathed… and that’s a sad way to spend such a large part of the year. How very traumatic for you all, and I feel awful for not having picked up your comment until now. I am not very good at checking them as assume there won’t be any!!!! I do hope things are sorting themselves out a bit but I understand so much of what you are going through. We have had a lot going on with N’s 90 year old mother recently which we’re trying to manage from afar which is not easy. Lots of tough decisions to be made in the coming days and weeks. Perhaps you could email me so we can have a better chat? I also note what you say about a supposed move to Pembrokeshire…?

Kestrel - thanks so much for reading and commenting. Yes, I agree with you that it was worth while, even if it means returning to bleak days. Just take out your photos of those lovely clear turquoise waters, bikinis and tans on the sail decks, sunrise and sun sets, sail rides and cocktails. OK you can probably face the grey days and cold! By June I was desperate to go abroad, but so frustrated by all the red tape ... and then ... Jane's mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. What with caring and moving/not moving to Pembrokeshire it feels like we have lost a whole summer - in many ways we have. She passed away a few weeks ago and we are slowly recovering from the emotional turmoil, though the disruption continues as we now have to make decisions about her dad who is of that generation who has not had to cope for himself and was highly dependent on his spouse.
But I go on too much...
Those things on hold will not spoil and no doubt there will be time for singing (though never dancing - ha ha!). again. Remembering the exact spot where your youngest fell off the bike to the people that had lived in the various houses. It is amazing how every turn and every corner brings home a moment in the past. Your feelings must have been so mixed - happy and sad, laughing at a funny gone-by moment and lingering at spots where happy incidents occurred. It feels good to return and appreciate our past.
