If you've been prepared to die for our country, surely you have a right to live here? Far more than many who are daily allowed through the gates....

What do you think?

I fully support the right of Gurkhas to live here and think it is absolutely disgraceful of the government to block this when so many other people who have done NOTHING for our country are let in on a daily basis.

The Gurkhas have fought (and many have died)for our country, yet this is deemed not to be a good enough reason to live here. I am so angry on their behalf - and VERY glad that Joanna Lumley ran rings around whatshisname at Westminster yesterday! The government are looking more foolish by the day over this!

I have had the good fortune to have spent time with Gurkhas and they are wonderful people who do not deserve such appaling treatment!

Rant over - I feel better now!
Thanks for that!:)

I agree with the Nutty Gnome, though I have wondered why Joanna Lumley took up the cause, does she have some link to the Gurkhas? I have to say though, it's not something I feel vehemently about, though did go to the petition link as I believe that if we do nothing about things that concern us, then we have only ourselves to blame when nothing changes!

Hi PFG - Joanna Lumley's father was a Major in the 6th Gurkha Rifles. If you want to read more, here's a link for her biography. She was born in Srinagar, Kashmir, while her father was serving with the Gurkhas.

Quite right re not being able to complain if we do nothing about anything. We DO have the power to change things. Joanna Lumley is proving this and, from my own experience with a successful campaign to prevent the closure of our Ofted rated 'Outstanding' village school (see the link to this campaign on my side bar), I know that if you fight hard enough and make reasoned, intelligent arguments, you can achieve change.

PEOPLE POWER does exist! There's more of us than the politicians, after all!

I don't really have any business commenting, as I don't live in the UK, but I did read about this in our paper over here. It seems to me a question of doing the right thing. I believe that England has come a long way from the days when it saw the colonies as sources of cannon fodder. If these men were good enough to put their lives on the line for England you'd think they'd be good enough to live in England. Good for you for highlighting the story.

Yep, fighting for rights is right and proper. It's just I have a problem spelling Gurkha.

I am incensed at how the Ghurkas have been treated. They are such lovely people, we see a lot in Wales as they are based here.
I shall sign the petition.
I am another who wants to see the Gurkhas allowed to live here. We can't have it both ways - if they fight for our country and die for it those who survive should be able to live in it.

It would seem to go, absolutely, without saying, and you put it one, if you are prepared to fight and die for this country, later to make it your home should be a given. Yet, rant, meanwhile the doors are opened to those who have made public protestations of hate, all those crazy "clerics". Complete madness.
